Farm Subsidies Go to Anti-Federal Government Candidates

None of the five GOP candidates for agriculture commissioner have much good to say about the federal government and its intrusion on state affairs. But that aversion didn't extend to thousands of dollars they each received in federal farm subsidy payments during the last 20 years.

The five Republican candidates received more than $1.3 million in farm subsidies from 1995 to 2012, according to a database compiled by the Environmental Working Group, an organization in Washington, D.C., that advocates for better agriculture policies. They got money for a variety of reasons, including disaster assistance and routine programs that pay farmers if crop prices drop below certain thresholds for products like cotton or wheat.

The numbers do not include the value of heavily subsidized crop insurance policies that farmers have access to, so the amount of government assistance they received could be larger. In addition, some candidates have received other subsidies under their business names.

Despite having benefited from federal agricultural policy in the past decades, and acknowledging the importance of government assistance to farmers, some candidates said they would not have voted for the new farm bill, which President Obama signed last week.

I live in a basically small ag area in the NE and we still have plenty of small family or community farms.
Most of these people are busting there butt from before dawn till well after dark just to get by. What they get in subsidies just barely keeps them going. Most have some side job to earn enough to pay the bills.

If you want to eliminate waste in farm subsidies, cap the recipients to those with less than $5M (or some other adjusted figure) in assets or income per year, or production per acre ( to eliminate the gentleman farmer playing the tax code to buy a big old estate and cut the tax responsibility).
There are so many powerful interests involved that taking an easy "fuck em all" response is just so uninformed as to not offer serious interest.

I only answered your response to try to offer another perspective.

Those of us who grow food for those in our community don't get shit from Federal subsidies. Even if we could qualify for our pittance, we don't have the time or energy to piss with the paperwork. And when we do, some FU is going to lose it or just find some excuse to run us through the ringer again.
