Describing Attorney General Greg Abbott as in some ways hostile to the future of Texas, Sen. Wendy Davis, D-Fort Worth, said Thursday that she would be better able to lead the state as governor, even with an overwhelmingly Republican Legislature.
Davis also said that she did not believe being identified with the Democratic Party, with President Obama or with her famous filibuster on abortion would hurt her chances of election, and, when asked whether she thought Texas is a sexist state, replied, Absolutely not. Look at me. Here I am, sitting on this stage as a gubernatorial candidate a little old girl who grew up in a pretty humble background.
The stage was Stateside at the Paramount on Congress Avenue for an hour-long TribLive event at which Davis answered questions from Evan Smith, CEO and editor-in-chief of the Texas Tribune, and members of the audience.
Davis and Abbott won their respective partys nominations for governor in Tuesdays primary election and Davis portrayed herself Thursday as better equipped to move Texas forward into the 21st Century while Abbott would essentially offer nothing more than a status quo inadequate to challenges facing the state, particularly with regard to education, the prime focus of her campaign and, she indicated, her governorship if elected.

(9,019 posts)The times I have heard her speak I have not been particularly inspired or impressed. I'm not asking for the oratorical skills of a Martin Luther King or Robert Ingersoll, just something that will make me say "yeah!" once in awhile. She's got my vote already and practically every other Democrat in this wasteland otherwise known as Texas, but if she is going to win she will need to win over some independents and even some Republicans. A little fire now and then wouldn't hurt.
