CPRIT attack turns personal for Democratic political activist

AUSTIN — When Glenn Smith, director of the Progress Texas PAC, started work on an online video campaign linking Republican Greg Abbott to the state cancer-research funding scandal, the project was political.

When the video aired this week, it had become personal.

Smith, a political veteran of many Democratic campaigns, steered production of the video. It accuses Abbott, the attorney general who is now the Republican nominee for governor, of failing to oversee the troubled agency in which the companies of political donors benefited from millions of dollars in taxpayer grants designed for cancer research.

In conceiving the video, Smith wanted to feature cancer survivors to illustrate that the scandal was about people, not just political contributions and election-year talking points.
