GOP Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick Treated for Depression in 1980s

Reports of a state senator’s 1980s treatment for depression and exhaustion became an issue in the lieutenant governor’s race late Thursday, when the Quorum Report, a political newsletter, unearthed court papers detailing Dan Patrick’s medical history.

In his deposition in a lawsuit, Patrick, whose legal name at the time was Dannie Scott Goeb, said he was diagnosed as having a chemical imbalance in the early 1980s and said he was hospitalized at Spring Shadows Glen in “late ’84 or early ’85, possibly.” He also said the treatment consisted entirely of rest. “I absolutely did nada,” he said in the deposition. “You know, there may have been something I don’t remember. But, you know, I did nothing but sleep, sleep, sleep.”

He was asked in the deposition, related to a lawsuit over an altercation with a newspaper reporter, whether he had suffered a nervous breakdown, and said, “No.” He also said he had not told any doctors he was on the verge of a nervous breakdown.

Later in the deposition, Patrick said he was admitted into Memorial City Hospital in June 1982 for “a week, two weeks” of rest. Asked if he considered that “a significant event in his life,” he answered, “no.” And he said that the diagnosis of a chemical imbalance was made after tests taken during that stay.

With my mental health issues I believe that I have the right to comment on this article. First, receiving treatment for depression should not disqualify any candidate for political office. However, the article notes that Patrick had a chemical imbalance which means that he probably should be taking some type of medication to alleviate the chemical imbalance. Is he currently receiving any type of medication or is he seeking psychiatric care or counseling on a regular basis so that his depression does not reoccur?

Further down in the article is a section where his doctor, Dr. Stephen Kramer of Houston states:

“There was no evidence of cognitive impairment,” the doctor wrote. “Since he has been asymptomatic for all these years, a reoccurrence is unlikely.”

I am dubious about that remark since Dan Patrick repeatedly demonstrates his cognitive impairment and I also believe that a relapse into depression is possible. If Dan Patrick did not receive therapy to learn how to handle stress, he is not receiving counseling and/or he is not taking any medication to correct the chemical imbalances, then he is subject to another occurrence of depression.

I believe that the social stigma that accompanies mental health issues is overstated since most people can keep their mental health issues under control with proper treatment--be it medication or counseling. Furthermore, I believe that the release of this documentation is a "hit piece" by his opponents. However, questions about whether he is receiving adequate treatment or whether he is subject to a relapse are valid for voters to ask.

However, the cost of counseling is very prohibitive so I understand why some people only take antidepressants.

I'm surprised that the story happening in your neck of the woods hasn't received more attention though.

He (and his creditors) have made a fortune over the years from publicly vilifying Democrats and liberal beliefs of every sort. I listened to his radio rants for years in Houston, and I've followed his subsequent legislative career---the man is absent any redeeming qualities. He gets no sympathy from me---and I've got significant exposure to the corrosive effects of depression in my family. He's as toxic a conservative individual as there is in the entire state of Texas, and he deserves nothing but our scorn.

I have always thought he was in no way a reasonable person but a very sick person, in the same way I think Cruz is.

The court documents, depositions and exhibits that were part of a 1987 slander suit that Patrick filed against the now-defunct Houston Post, show that Patrick was at the time taking the anti-depressant Impramine and spent several weeks in the Spring Shadows Glen center in Houston. Documents also document at least one reported suicide attempt.

According to the deposition, Patrick also acknowledged he has been in Spring Shadows Glen, a shuttered psychiatric hospital in Houston. He said he wasn't sure exactly when he was there, but that it was in 1984 or 1985 "and for a period of about 10 days."

Insisting he was not there for psychiatric or emotional problems, but, "for rest," Patrick said he "slept, basically, for two weeks," according to the court document.

He also said he had been hospitalized at another facility, Memorial City, in the early 1980s for "fatigue, exhaustion."

Other records show Patrick was admitted to Spring Shadows Glen for "severe depression" after reporting "feelings of worthlessness, helplessness, hopelessness and marked decrease of self-esteem."

That admission was directly related to a suicide attempt on Jan. 14, 1986, according to the records, in which he tried to overdose on an antidepressant medication and slash his right wrist before collapsing and being taken to a local emergency clinic. According to the records, Patrick reported "business and marital problems and difficulties in personal relationships."

This account doesn't square with his claim of suffering from moderate depression. While he may have decided to voluntarily admit himself into the psychiatric hospital, it could have also been an attempt to retain some control over his personal life instead of having court records showing that he was involuntarily committed.

Whether this story will make any difference in the runoff elections in a couple of weeks is doubtful due to limited attention by voters; however, Leticia Van de Putte will have months to dig more thoroughly into these reports and it should be a major concern in the November elections. Being admitted once for moderate depression is vastly different than being admitted twice with a suicide attempt.

Was anybody else in Houston listening when Patrick started frothing at the mouth over a brief public glimpse of Ms. Jackson's nipple? He completely lost it on his radio show---went into a combination screaming/talking in tongues thing that was genuinely alarming. The revelations about his mental problems don't surprise me in the least. We really need to keep this man out of the Lt. Governor's office; the things he's capable of are genuinely frightening.
