Wendy Davis got a rude welcome by supporters of Republican opponent Greg Abbott in advance of a Los Angeles fundraiser life-sized posters depicting her as Abortion Barbie. The posters showed Davis face on a scantily clad barbie doll with a plastic baby in her belly. The Davis campaign denounced the posters and called on Abbott to denounce them. Abbott and Davis face each other in the race for Texas governor.

Abbott campaign spokesman Matt Hirsch said: Its not affiliated with our campaign and we find it appalling. The campaign said it didnt know who put up the posters.
Davis campaign spokesman Zac Petkanas called the posters offensive and said they demonstrate that the Abbott campaign is out of touch with women. This is just another in a long line of offensive actions and comments by Greg Abbott in an attempt to demean Wendy Davis and women across Texas. Last year, Abbott thanked a supporter last year who called Davis retard Barbie on Twitter.
Conservative blogger Erick Erickson nicknamed Davis Abortion Barbie earlier this year because of her 11-hour filibuster in the Texas Senate in opposition to abortion regulations. The regulations, which ultimately were approved by the Legislature, have led to the shutdown of several abortion clinics in Texas. Davis campaign told The Huffington Post that it spotted at least five of the posters in different outdoor places around the city, including one on the campus of the University of California, Los Angeles.

ETA: Kathryn Stuard of Midland told the San Antonio Express-News she donated an undisclosed amount to conservative street artist Sabo to create the posters, which portray Davis' face over a semi-naked Barbie doll with an exposed fetus in the womb.

(4,695 posts)Remember when the Komen Foundation cut ties with Planned Parenthood even though there was a division between clinics that did not provide abortions and those that did? Taking out their anger on poor women needing health care backfired on Conservatives and their private business interest brought down much of the support that they received. The Race for the Cure, was canceled the following two years in a row, I believe. Women know that there are very very few late term abortions.

The Women's Health Care in Texas was basically removed by the GOP, Texas Legislature and Governors Perry's administrative authority.

(9,132 posts)Keep watching. The Texas Tea-publicans will sink even lower. It's been a long, long time since the majority of Texas voters have gotten angry enough to punish politicians for playing in such filth.
There are a very few good things about this incident. I think it's angered Texas progressives. And despite the fact that this poster was meant to help Greg Abbot's campaign, this poster's nastiness is going to splash onto Ted Cruz; people outside the Tea Party bubble are going to remember this poster in 2016 when he primaries outside the shelter of the deferential treatment he's gotten from the Texas corporate news media.
