Follow-up: Georgetown PD suspends cop that tripped and pushed students after state soccer tournament

Officer George Bermudez (2013 Police Officer of the Year)

The Georgetown Police Department has moved to suspend an officer caught on tape trying to prevent students from rushing the field after a high school soccer championship in April. Officer George Bermudez faces a 40-day suspension without pay, according to a press release from Police Chief Wayne Nero sent Wednesday evening, for "inappropriate actions" that "brought discredit upon yourself, your fellow officers and our community." After the girls soccer team at Austin's Vandegrift High School won a state championship April 19 at Georgetown's Birkelbach Field and students rushed the field to celebrate, Officer Bermudez appeared in a YouTube video tripping a male high schooler and shoving others while attempting to clear them from the playing field. Chief Nero said in the statement that, while he did not consider the conduct sufficient to fire Officer Bermudez, "similar actions in the future will result in [his] dismissal from our organization."
