Ted Cruz assumes the mantle of Reagan in convention speech
FORT WORTH
U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz addressed an adoring crowd at the Republican State Convention Friday, assuming the mantle of Ronald Reagan as a leader who was despised by the cognoscenti for speaking truth to tyranny.
At one point, Cruz led the thousands assembled in the Fort Worth Convention Center in reciting perhaps President Reagans most famous line Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall delivered by Reagan at Berlins Brandenburg Gate in what Cruz said were the most important words uttered by any leader in modern times.
Reagan, Cruz said, was willing to identify the Soviet Union as the evil empire, to say that Marxist-Leninism would end up on the ash heap of history, and, when he was asked, `whats your strategy for the cold war? he said, `Its very simple, we win, they lose.
Now all the intelligentsia, all the cognoscenti, they tittered at such an uneducated, philistine view, Cruz said. He didnt have the sophistication. He didnt have the nuance. He didnt understand detente, which Im pretty sure is French for surrender.
