Texas GOP In Need Of Therapy

Last week’s Texas GOP convention was something plucked straight out of the old sixties satire, That Was the Week That Was. When I read their 2014 platform, I thought I was reading The Onion…but it was real.

Deleting the words, freedom, freedoms, liberty, liberties, family values, true conservative, makers, takers, control spending, we-the-people, patriot, and patriotism, here’s the Spark notes version:

1. Repeal the Voting Rights Act of 1965

2. Reparative therapy to “cure” homosexuality

3. Climate change is a conspiracy

4. Drug test welfare recipients

5. Abolish the Department of Education

6. Abolish the Department of Homeland Security

7. Deny a woman’s right to choose, even in cases of rape and incest

8. Oppose non-discrimination laws

9. Disband the TSA

10. Defund Texas schools

11. Reject the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child

12. Withdraw from the United Nations

If your reaction was one of slack-jawed amazement, join the club.

It’s clear that the most extreme of the extremists have hijacked the Texas GOP; think Captain Ahab, the Pequod and his white whale obsession; it’s that crazy and that scary. Having Eagle Forum’s Cathie Adams’ blessing is further proof that the inmates have taken over the asylum.
