Former GM CEO Whitacre donates $15 million to Texas Tech, could receive matching funds
Texas Tech has received a gift of $15 million to benefit graduate student fellowships from alumnus Edward E. Whitacre Jr. of the Whitacre College of Engineering.
Whitacre, former chairman of the Tech Board of Regents, CEO of General Motors and chairman emeritus of AT&T, made the gift with his wife, Linda, to establish the Ed and Linda Whitacre Graduate Fellowship Endowment. The endowment will fund about 30 doctoral fellows per year.
The donation is eligible for state matching funds through the Texas Research Incentive Program, which could result in a total $30 million impact on the university.
The money will benefit the graduate school as a whole and will not be limited to specific academic programs, said Scott Cooksey, interim vice chancellor for institutional advancement.
