M.D. Anderson doctor reveals details of affair in testimony at poisoning trial

From the beginning, George Blumenschein suspected his mistress of poisoning him, but the buttoned-up oncologist from M.D. Anderson did not tell authorities or colleagues.

"I wanted them to find out it wasn't who I thought it was," Blumenschein testified Friday.

He did not want to believe the assailant could be Ana Maria Gonzalez-Angulo, another doctor at the world-famous cancer institution with whom he was having an affair. And if it was she, he did not want her to know he suspected her while flat on his back in the hospital where she worked.

"I was just really vulnerable," he said.

[font color=green]Dr. Blumenscchein was poisoned with ethylene glycol (the chemical in anti-freeze and has a sweet taste) poured in his coffee. The doctor was found to have central nervous system depression, cardiopulmonary complications and renal failure. He subsequently had to undergo dialysis.[/font]
