It was a friendly warning (Travis county) and I politely told them if my full middle name on my driver's license instead of my middle initial precluded my voting... well, that was so ridiculous that it was a fight I would welcome!

No, no, I would not be changing my driver's license because some idiot law wanted it exactly to match my signature.
It was too insane a proposition to be pursued. I would not be chased into such insanity by Republican tactics. No. Effing. Way.

I won't change my ID either but I will make sure to put my full middle name when I renew my voter registration - although I shouldn't have to.

You know, like if you're wearing blue in one and red in another, or your hair isn't the same. Then what? Truth is, photo ID or any other kind of ID doesn't absolutely prove you are who you say you are. Finger printing, genetic screening and retinal scans can't be far off, and if you don't pass all three you get taken away to an undisclosed location for enhanced interrogation. That should lower voter turnout big time.

It is not hard to change your name on the voter registration records to match your id. Out of 176 votes, I had over 30 name changed forms completed which should make the general election easier

How do you remedy the situation? Do you stop and go back and find an appropriate ID that Texas will allow to let you vote that day, or can you come back another day to vote?
This 4th generation Texan is happy to say that I just voted in the election in Colorado and boy is it different. Sorry to know it's so difficult there.

The TX Sec. of State power point for election judges is okay on this but there will be confusion in this election. Senator Wendy Davis got the substantially similar language added to SB14. Without that language, this election would be a nightmare and I am not sure that there will not be meltdowns along the way. My county has already reported a couple of incidents to the state party

from here

Q6: My name on my approved photo ID does not exactly match my name on my voter registration card. Can I still vote?

Election officials will review the ID and if a name is “substantially similar” to the name on their list of registered voters, you will still be able to vote, but you will also have to submit an affidavit stating that you are the same person on the list of registered voters.

Q7. What does “substantially similar” mean?

A voter’s name is considered substantially similar if one or more of the following circumstances applies:

The name on the ID is slightly different from one or more of the name fields on the official list of registered voters.
The name on the voter’s ID or on list of registered voters is a customary variation of the voter’s formal name. For example, Bill for William, or Beto for Alberto.
The voter’s name contains an initial, middle name, or former name that is either not on the official list of registered voters or on the voter’s ID.
A first name, middle name, former name or initial of the voter’s name occupies a different field on the presented ID document than it does on the list of registered voters.
In considering whether a name is substantially similar, election officials will also look at whether information on the presented ID matches elements of the voter’s information on the official list of registered voters such as the voter’s residence address or date of birth.

It's a mess.

The old codger said "the address on your license is different from the one on you voter registration." I said okay thanks. He just continued to look at me. Then he showed his partner who told him it doesn't matter what the license says which made this guy look all deflated like he just missed a big bust or something. I should have told him I was voting straight Democrat for more of a reaction.
