Perry promoted aide with three alcohol offenses on record

AUSTIN — When Gov. Rick Perry tried to force a district attorney from office for drunken driving, he cited outrage at her behavior and a loss of confidence in her ability to do the job.

But on his own staff, Perry has hired and promoted a top adviser with three intoxication offenses on his record.

Wayne Roberts, who now heads up the governor’s signature creation, the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas, was convicted of driving while intoxicated in 1990 and 2006. He also was fined in 2000 on a charge of public intoxication in Virginia.

Perry made him budget director in December 2001 and appointed him to the State Pension Review Board in 2009. The board of the cancer fund, known as CPRIT, appointed Roberts to his current position, and three of the board members were selected by Perry. At both the pension board and CPRIT, Roberts oversees billions of state dollars.

there are questions about the rights of someone suffering from a disease.

The salient question here would be if the disease is being successfully treated. Only if not would I consider not hiring.

But a person with an alcohol problem gets shunned with no job? Nah! Good for the Governor for giving this person perhaps one last try to get better and work.

to remain gainfully employed. However, this is not a situation where the person did not have a job. He was employed and then promoted into positions which required oversight of billions of taxpayer money fairly soon after his criminal offenses. While the newspaper article mentioned something about "treatment" there is no indication as to whether he was admitted into a rehabilitation program or if he is currently involved in a group such as AA. Considering the amount of stress involved with the positions that he is holding it does seem relevant to inquire as to whether this person is the best choice for the job.

be surprised about the integrity of a man who hangs out at a ranch named after a racial epithet? I can't bring myself to type the disgusting term, but people can search it out if they really want to develop a hatred for the man.
