Even Sam Houston had to deal with them. And Mirabeau Lamar was their leader and would be a right wing neocon today. Lamar opposed annexation to the US. Lamar authorized the Ill-fated Santa Fe expedition where the people said, screw you. This isn't Texas. Even Fanin, being an idiot who was loyal to Lamar, didn't recognize Houston as president and commander. He disobeyed the order to withdraw from Goliad and managed to get himself and his troops killed.

Even the Mier Expedition (black beans) was a bunch of right wing nuts that went off unauthorized, much like a militia today, and thought they were going to go kick Mexico's ass. It didn't go as planned.

Sam Houston was the original Texas liberal. He had to put up with the sane right wing nuts. But the ironies of all Texas ironies, the last I knew his desk in the US Senate was in Phil Gramm's office. Now it's got to be in either Cornyn's or Cruz' office.
