Windstorm association reform could have new name

AUSTIN — A panel of state senators mulled over a plan to reform the Texas Windstorm Insurance Association, which supplies hundreds of thousands of coastal policies, including by giving the organization a new name: the Texas Coastal Insurance Association.

The bill from state Sen. Larry Taylor, R-Friendswood, which has the coauthorship of state Sen. Juan “Chuy” Hinojosa, D-McAllen, would restructure the board to help it be more fair toward coastal residents, restructures how the funding works, lets private carriers handle claims for the association and also bring in a third party to manage the association.

“This legislation is crucial for our coastal communities and the state of Texas,” Hinojosa said in a statement.

“Our goal, quite frankly, is to provide accessibility and affordability,” Hinojosa told the panel of senators at the Tuesday hearing.
