Texas Republican County Commissioner Posts Facebook White Pride Rant

This week in Baltimore, Maryland, protests erupted after the death of Freddie Gray, a 25-year old black man who died of spinal cord injuries that appear to be the result of police brutality. Gray’s case is the latest in the seemingly never-ending series of highly publicized cases of excessive violence from police that have taken the lives of black individuals.

Meanwhile, in Beckville, Texas, a white man lamented the fact that he can’t have white-only clubs without being labeled a racist. John Gradberg, a Republican, serves as the commissioner for Precinct 2 on the Panola County Commissioners Court in east Texas. This past Tuesday, his frustration with how bad white people have it in this country boiled over, and he posted a declaration of white pride on his Facebook page. In his post, Gradberg covers all the standard “white people are oppressed” bases. He thinks it’s unfair that there’s no white history month, no White Entertainment Television network, no white-only Miss America pageant, et cetera. There’s even a bit of anti-semitism thrown in, just for kicks. (It’s unclear why he’s so upset about Yom Hashoah–does it bother him that Jews have a day to remember the 6 million of them who were massacred? Because there are definitely no holidays for Christians to honor those who were killed for their religious beliefs.) Evidently, John Gradberg thinks that his being excluded from spaces that people of color have created for themselves constitutes a direct attack on his rights as white man.

Here’s the crucial piece that’s missing from John Gradberg’s white pride Facebook rant, however–he never stopped to consider why all of these things that he hates came to be in the first place.
