Ivy Taylor elected mayor of San Antonio

Ivy Taylor made history Saturday by becoming the first elected African American mayor of San Antonio.

Appointed interim mayor last summer, Taylor defeated former state Sen. Leticia Van de Putte in the Saturday runoff election. The former lawmaker couldn't overcome Taylor, despite raising more than twice the campaign contributions of her opponent in one of the most vitriolic local elections this city has witnessed.

Taylor captured the election with nearly 52 percent of the vote with a total of 34,070 votes to Van de Putte's 30,813.

Taylor jumped out to an early, but close lead when early-vote totals posted. And though her lead never grew above five percentage points, she would stay ahead of Van de Putte the whole night.
