The Alamo has a new official cat and she's extremely adorable

SAN ANTONIO — Almost a year after the Alamo's most recent, and arguably most well-known, cat custodian died, the Texas shrine has a new feline defender.

Miss Isabella Francisca Veramendi de Valero — or Bella for short — was crowned the official Alamo cat on Thursday, the latest in a long line of feline friends at the shrine. Photos posted to social media showed Bella sitting pretty on one of the Alamo's cannons and playing with staffers at their desks.

Her royal full name pulls from Texas history, including the Goliad Massacre (Francisca, the Angel of Goliad), an early leader of of San Antonio de Bexar (Juan Martín Veramendi) and the original name of the Alamo (which was Mission San Antonio de Valero).

Bella even has something in common with the Alamo defenders honored at her new home. As a kitten, she came to the Alamo via the Presidio La Bahía in Goliad — one of the forts from which Lt. Col. William B. Travis requested reinforcements in 1836. Bella was found on the grounds of Presidio La Bahía by the daughter of site director Scott McMahon, who brought Bella to San Antonio for the ceremony commemorating the Battle of the Alamo's 179 anniversary earlier this year.
