Plaque honoring Leslie Cochran to be unveiled on Sixth Street in Austin

The man, the thong, the legend. On Wednesday, the Pecan Street Association will unveil a plaque on East Sixth Street honoring Austin icon Albert “Leslie” Cochran, according to a news release.

Cochran, who died in 2012, was known for his outré fashion and embodiment of Austin’s special brand of “weird.” The non-profit association says the plaque, which will call The Nook at 309 E. 6th St. home, is meant to honor Cochran’s life and contributions to Sixth Street’s culture. The Austin icon was “a man of the streets, who spoke to all of the fun and acceptance of all types of people that visit our iconic, historic street of dreams,” association president Shannon Sedwick said in the release.

The plaque, which the association says is paid for by proceeds from the Pecan Street Festival, will be unveiled at 6 p.m. The language on the plaque reads in part:

“Leslie, Queen of Austin (born Albert Leslie Cochran), roamed 6th St. in g-strings and heels with his trademark goatee, and had a saucy comment for every passerby who snapped a photo with him. A political activist, he ran for mayor 3 times, coming in 2nd place once.”

After the memorial marker is unveiled, a birthday party for Leslie and a procession down Sixth Street will follow, according to the news release.
