Indictment: Whitehouse police chief assaulted wife of one of his officers

The indictment against Whitehouse Police Chief Craig Shelton was released Friday, just hours after he turned himself into the Smith County Jail on the Class A assault charge.

The charge stems from a May 14 incident at a duplex in the 200 block of Memory Lane in Whitehouse in which Shelton was accused of assaulting one of his officers' wives.

The charge was a misdemeanor and did not include any type of accusation relating to sexual assault or any type of felony charge.

The indictment states," ...Shelton did then and there intentionally, knowingly, and recklessly cause bodily injury to Jessica Johnson, by grabbing Jessica Johnson with his hand and by pushing Jessica Johnson with his hand."

Whitehouse City Council came out of executive session at 10:04 p.m. A motion was made to return City Manager Kevin Huckabee to duty, on probation for 11 weeks, without power to hire and fire for that probationary period. He will also have a letter of reprimand placed in his file. The motion passed unanimously. Council members did not state for what reason exactly Huckabee is being placed on probation.

Acting City Manager Stefani Wright and the acting police chief Dan Finkelstein will make the decisions on the employment status of the remaining employees on paid leave -- Police Chief Craig Shelton and three police officers.
