Republicans keep quiet following Paxton indictment

AUSTIN — Republican leaders in Austin remained quiet Saturday as Democrats and government watchdogs lambasted Attorney General Ken Paxton amid reports that the state’s top law enforcement official was indicted on state securities fraud charges.

“The widespread corruption in state government continues,” said Glenn Smith, director of Progress Texas PAC.

Paxton’s indictment is the second in the last year against a sitting Republican statewide elected official. Former Gov. Rick Perry was indicted last summer on criminal charges related to allegations he abused his power while in office.

A Collin County grand jury issued a three-count indictment against Paxton Tuesday. The charges include two counts of first-degree securities fraud and one count of third-degree failure to register.
