Jim Wells County Sheriff Office dog left in patrol unit, dies

ALICE -- A Jim Wells County Sheriff’s Office dog died after being left in his handler’s patrol unit for more than 20 hours, and its handler has been relieved of his duties, Sheriff Oscar Lopez said.

“We got (the cause) under investigation; we believe it was the heat,” Lopez said.

Dog handler Latham Roldan was initially placed on administrative leave Monday after the sheriff’s office was advised about an incident involving one of the office’s dogs named Jola, according to a sheriff’s office news release.

“The preliminary findings show that his K-9 partner, Jola, was left in the unit and consequently died,” the release stated.

JIM WELLS COUNTY -

KRIS6 has received new information on the narcotics K-9 that died after being left in a hot patrol car in Jim Wells County.

The patrol unit was equipped with a special hot car alarm that should have gone-off when the unit started getting hot.

However, the Jim Wells County Sheriff's office says the officer must have turned it off when he got out of the vehicle.

It'll be up to the county attorney to decide if charges will be filled.
