New book unveils Mathis’ past battles with racism

MATHIS – From 2007 to 2012, graduate school student Felipe Hinojosa spent hot summer days in the archive room of Mathis News pouring over vintage articles and sweating profusely for his work.

No one was completely sure what he was looking for, but he assured them it was for a project for school.

“And I’m sure whoever was there back then was thinking, ‘Who is this kid?” Hinojosa said with a laugh.

Now assistant professor of history at Texas A&M University in College Station, he has finally realized the fruits of his labor.

Hinojosa’s book Latino Mennonites: Civil Rights, Faith, and Evangelical Culture hit bookshelves in 2014 and revealed a lot more local history and dealings with the Hispanic civil rights movement than the title suggests.
