McKinney ends contract with troubled public transit agency

The City of McKinney City Council voted early this morning to cancel their contract with the embattled and finally cash-strapped, regional public transportation provider, TAPS, which has been serving the citizens of the Collin County seat of government (pop 155,000) for several years. TAPS management is facing a criminal probe into the handling of public tax dollars by the transportation provider.

Two of the TAPS Board members sit on the McKinney City Council (Tea Party favorites, Randy Pogue and newly elected Chuck Branch-, with the Mayor of McKinney, Brian Loughmiller giving up his seat on the TAPS Board this past summer).

The City has authorized their city manager to begin negotiations to find a solution to the public transportation issues. Mr. Branch noted that it could take up to a year to secure funding via the regional transportation commission, the State and the Federal Government.

In the meantime, disabled and senior citizens that depend on public transportation in the city will have to make due without any.
