Warrant: Person of interest spoke to others about plans to shoot Judge Kocurek

A man being held in relation to the shooting attack on Travis County state District Judge Julie Kocurek made plans to kill her and spoke to others about the scheme, according to a search warrant filed in Harris County.

The court documents are the first public filings to make a connection between Chimene Onyeri and the Nov. 6 assassination attempt since the Houston native was named a person of interest in Austin police’s investigation that now includes the FBI.

Onyeri, 28, has been charged with murder in an unrelated shooting case in Harris County. He is accused of killing a man in May as an act of retaliation.

Austin police filed the warrant Friday to search Onyeri’s Houston home for evidence in the attack, including any mention of Kocurek in documents or electronic data.

......Onyeri’s attorney, Sam Adamo, said that the informant is an ex-girlfriend of Onyeri’s with an ax to grind. Adamo said he believes the woman is providing false information about Onyeri to avoid being jailed herself.

“The information she is providing, we don’t know how she could have gotten it,” Adamo said, noting that Onyeri has not spoken to her in months.

Onyeri has remained in the Harris County Jail since shortly after the brazen Nov. 6 attack on Kocurek in front of her West Austin home.

Onyeri has a pending matter in Kocurek’s court that would have him sent to prison if his probation in a 2012 Rollingwood case involving stolen credit cards were revoked. Onyeri, who was born in the U.S., was identified as a member of a Nigerian crime ring in that case.
