NORMANNA The lawsuit filed against the Normanna Cemetery Association has been settled with the association agreeing not to refuse burial of anyone based on ethnicity or race.
The lawsuit, settled recently in the Southern District of Texas federal courtroom in Corpus Christi, was filed by the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund on behalf of the GI Forum in April after Dorothy Barrera said the caretaker of the cemetery turned her away from the San Domingo Cemetery because her husband was Hispanic.
The incident has been called a misunderstanding by the board.
According to previous reports, the association has no written policy against burying Hispanics in the cemetery despite none being in the cemetery to date.

(15,805 posts)Other articles have more information, but despite laws prohibiting discrimination, the cemetery had been "whites only" for over 100 years. The irony of a cemetery with the Spanish name of San Domingo refusing to allow anyone with an Hispanic name to be buried there evidently went unnoticed until this widow spoke out. The owner even told her to go up the road and bury her husband "with the n------ and Mexicans. And even after the court ruling, the cemetery owner still has not buried the ashes.
There's some serious hate in that town.

(112,252 posts)since I doubt that many people know where Normanna (pop. 113, 2010 census) is located. I grew up in the county to the west of there so Normanna was about 40 miles away.
