Talking Points For TX Democratic Senatorial Candidate

Most of us realize that the R's are going to have a senatorial candidate that'll be much further to the right than outgoing Kay Bailey Hutchison. From my viewpoint, I wouldn't be surprised if the right-wing Texas Republican party's right wing foists Ted Cruz on the rest of us.

Which leads to my first talking point. Post offices.

Even in these times of internet, UPS, and FedEx Office, most of us still use the post office for mailing stuff. Having the nearest post office miles away is a pain in the @ss, and that's if we're still young enough to drive at all hours or are prosperous enough to afford an automobile or gasoline.

As many of us know, the Postal Service is in financial trouble, and a large part of its trouble is due specifically to Republican legislative legerdemain during the last several years.

The usual Republican prescription is to close branch post offices. This "remedy," like most Republican "remedies" will have devastating effect, particularly in rural areas. The post office is still a lifeline for elderly or physically-challenged people lacking internet service or access to a nearby private package shipper like UPS. A shuttered post office is still something that can spell the difference between life and death for small Texas rural communities.

David Dewhurst is an establishment Texas Republican. Ted Cruz is a tea-partier. Whaddya bet that they'd stand in the way of allowing branch post offices from being closed across the state?

There was a time when congressional candidates were PROUD to establish branch post offices and help provide access to the world for ordinary folks and the less fortunate. There days we have people who would DENY such access, and be PROUD about it!
