Denton County Democrats take stock and look toward 2018

LEWISVILLE -- Offering a lighthearted spritz to a night of politics, local Democrat Jill Brandenburg charged President Donald Trump with having neither the swagger of Barack Obama nor the political IQ of Lyndon B. Johnson. Thankfully so, she told the banquet hall full of Democrats, because the Trump administration's agenda is at odds with almost everybody here, at the third annual LBJ-Obama Dinner.

"These last five months have been the longest year of my life," county party executive director Travis Cooper told the crowd.

Terri Miller, the executive director of the Texas ACLU, delivered an assuring speech to Democrats anxious of Trump's intentions to dismantle the traditional structure of the federal government. As she recounted the American Civil Liberties Union's 97-year history of suing the federal government, some were brought to tears.

"We've always corrected course in this country," Miller said. "Because we use the law to challenge the government on its abuse of power. It has always worked."
