Kirbyville HS principal commits suicide after handing in resignation

The principal of Kirbyville High School fatally shot himself Tuesday afternoon, just an hour after he handed in his resignation to Superintendent Tommy Wallis, a Beaumont television station is reporting.

According to KFDM-TV, Dennis Reeves was found dead from a gunshot wound to the head around 5 p.m. inside his running vehicle parked at the school. Kirbyville Police Chief Paul Brister told the station Reeves had submitted a resignation letter to Wallis around 4 p.m.

KFDM reported that Wallis and the assistant superintendent were the only people on campus. School dismissed for the summer on Friday.

Wallis said the meeting was called to discuss summer projects and staffing.

Wallis gave Kirbyville High School principal ultimatum before his death

A report released by the Kirbyville Police Department shows Kirbyville High School principal Dennis Reeves was confronted over a possible affair and was given the option to resign or be fired.

According to a statement given by superintendent Tommy Wallis, a district employee said she had had an affair with Reeves while she was working for him. Wallis and assistant superintendent Georgia Sayers met with Reeves and asked him about the allegations, which Reeves denied.

Wallis then told Reeves he would be placed on administrative leave pending a district investigation. The report states Wallis told Reeves if an investigation showed he did have an affair and was lying, he would be fired, but if he did have an affair he could resign without an investigation. Reeves said he would resign and typed up a resignation letter.

The report states Reeves as escorted outside and returned about five minutes later to return tools from the welding shot. He told Sayers twice that he was "not good." About 15 minutes later, the school's maintenance director arrived to change the locks to Reeves' office and noticed his truck was still in the lot. According to Wallis' statement, he contacted the school board president, who had the police call Wallis. Wallis asked police to ask Reeves to leave, and when police arrived, it was discovered Reeves was dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

be terminated.

Apparently there were rumors that the principal and a secretary were having an affair. The previous superintendent and asst. superintendent investigated a year ago and could not substantiate the rumors. With the arrival of the new superintendent the rumors returned.
