Toll road scofflaws in Collin County won't be able to avoid blocked vehicle registrations anymore

Toll-road scofflaws beware. Beginning Sept. 1, Collin County residents who do not pay their toll bills will no longer be able to renew their vehicle registrations.

An agreement approved on Monday will close a loophole that has allowed those with delinquent accounts to continue registering their vehicles in person at county offices. The decision targets Collin County residents, who have a higher rate of scofflaws per population than any other North Texas county.

"It's all about fairness," NTTA spokesman Michael Rey said by email. "We see the most interest in this subject from our 92 percent of customers who do pay their toll bills."

Since 2013, the agency has had the authority to block vehicle registrations for so-called scofflaws. These habitual violators have accrued at least 100 outstanding tolls and have been issued at least two notices of non-payment over 12 months.
