Farenthold's military depots vote evokes silence from local leaders

Corpus Christi Republican Rep. Blake Farenthold is changing his tune on the federal government potentially privatizing certain military repair work, and Coastal Bend leaders aren’t backing their congressman’s decision.

Last week, Farenthold voted “nay” on amendment 43 to the Make America Secure Appropriations Act, which was approved 253-172. It was the first time in Farenthold’s seven-year career on Capitol Hill that he voted against the “annual question,” he said.

“I voted my conscience, because we’ve got to do what’s right for the country,” Farenthold told the Caller-Times.

Officially, the amendment, which passed, extends a moratorium on efforts to consider privatizing federal jobs at places like the Corpus Christi Army Depot, which was initially mandated by Congress in 2009. Farenthold's previous voting record on the amendments cannot be independently confirmed because some were put to voice votes, which are not individually recorded.
