Ted Cruzs Democratic challenger is working overtime to drive a wedge between the senator and his base on one of his central issues criminal justice reform.
Over the past six months, Rep. Beto ORourke has reached out to members of the conservative House Freedom Caucus to collaborate on the issue, hosted a Facebook Live event with them to talk marijuana policy, and sought support from the conservative advocacy group FreedomWorks for a criminal justice bill he introduced in the House.
While ORourke is no stranger to working with Republicans on issues relevant to his El Paso district, the lawmakers recent focus on criminal justice reform is part of a push to boost his profile for the uphill bid to unseat Cruz in the Senate in 2018.
Ive had more correspondence with Beto ORourkes office than most of the Republicans [in the Texas delegation], said Jason Pye, vice president of legislative affairs for FreedomWorks.

(22,270 posts)He was originally scheduled to speak at a local high school but at the very last minute the ISD cancelled the venue.
The event ended up at the RoundUp Inn at Will Rogers. 500 chairs were set up but more were added.
He gave a great talk then took questions and overstayed his booked time for the room by 2 hours.
It was a terrific evening. I fully believe that if it had not been for the sudden change of location he would have had 700
This was an actual town hall. Here in TX-12 our Congresswoman does not hold them due to "security issues" Balderdash! Beto's Town Hall Tour, in districts where the incumbents are not holding them is just genius!
