Coastal flooding, "dangerous" rip currents in Nueces, Kleberg counties due to Hurricane Irma

The National Weather Service on Saturday issued a coastal flood advisory that runs through late Sunday evening, with officials also warning of "life threatening" rip currents, for Kleberg and Nueces counties.

The notice issued Saturday afternoon stated that there would be a high risk of "dangerous" rip currents along beaches facing the Gulf of Mexico through Sunday night. Increasing swells and tides are projected to be one to 1.5 feet above normal, leading to "minor" flooding in beaches in Kleberg and Nueces counties, NWS officials said.

Additional long-period swells from Hurricane Irma, which is projected to make landfall in Florida as a Category 4 storm on Sunday, will start to be felt locally that same day. NWS officials said that was the reason for the coastal flooding advisory and high risk of rip currents in Kleberg and Nueces counties running through late Sunday night.

The coastal flood advisory will remain in effect until 1 a.m. on Monday, as will the rip current risk warning.
