Texas lawmaker blames Black Lives Matter 'bullies' for canceled speech at Houston college
HOUSTON Texas Southern University canceled an appearance Monday by a Republican lawmaker after protesters showed up to oppose the event.
TSU said the speech was canceled because "it was not a registered university student organization event." Rep. Briscoe Cain, R-Deer Park, said Black Lives Matter protesters bullied the historically black university into calling it off.
In a video of the event posted to Twitter by KHOU reporter Janelle Bludau, Cain is seen standing behind a classroom lectern as protesters holding placards and signs chant, "When a racist comes to town, shut it down!" and "No hate anywhere! You don't get a platform here."
TSU President Austin Lane then addressed the room, saying the speech was canceled because university rules were not followed in scheduling the event.
