State files last-minute motion to recuse Strother from 2 Twin Peaks shootout cases

A hearing in 19th State District Court in which Twin Peaks shootout defendants were asking to disqualify McLennan County District Attorney Abel Reyna was canceled Monday after prosecutors in Reyna's office filed a motion to recuse Judge Ralph Strother.

The motion caught Strother off guard and he said he was surprised at the request, since the state had vigorously opposed previous motions to remove him from other Twin Peaks shootout cases.

Strother took a break to consider whether he would voluntarily recuse himself and came back five minutes later and said he would not recuse himself and will ask a regional administrative judge to appoint another judge to hear the state's recusal motion.

Defense attorneys Brian Bouffard and David Conrad Beyer called the motion an improper stalling tactic.
