By Matt Zdun, Texas TribuneEarly Friday morning at a Fiesta Mart in Austin, voters dodged hurried grocery shoppers and their shopping carts and rushed to line up to vote in a tucked-away cove of the store. By mid-morning, the line to vote stretched past the nearby ice machine and into the butter and milk section several feet away.
Susan Gredler, the early voting deputy at Fiesta Mart, said she has seen huge numbers of people about 900 per day at her polling place all week since early voting began on Monday. At times, she said the line has wound around the inside perimeter of the store and past the meat section in the back.
Weve been really worried theyre waiting too long, said Gredler. But nobodys really been discontented to the point that they want to leave.
The bustling scene at Fiesta Mart is a common one. Voters across the state have come out in massive numbers during the first five days of early voting, and soon, more Texans will have voted early in 2018 than in all of 2014s early voting period, according to data from the secretary of states office.

(10,437 posts)both are motivated to vote now, the real key of any importance in Texas (and a few other states) will be if hispanic/latinos decide to get off their asses and vote. Enthusiasm in that demographic is at an all time high but will they vote?? They could be the game changer in dozens of elections

(25,372 posts)They are averaging at least 1200 voters/day, while areas in minority parts are averaging 600.
And records are being shattered in lovely places like Williamson and Montgomery Counties

(1,896 posts)It was busy, but not extreme. In and out in maybe 15 minutes.
I can live with it if that's representative and this red county doesn't have a high turnout.

(25,372 posts)It was smashing records the first few days...
And I know it's one of the reddest.
Home of the "Golden Hammer" and an assortment of RWNJs....And Republican precinct chairs who appear on radio.and even solicit donations for their election...good gosh...

(1,896 posts)But I'm clinging to the hope that the crazy ones have already voted and the marginally sane Republicans are despondent enough to sit this one out. It's going to take a lot of breaks for us to win much in this state, and I'll look for them wherever I can find them.
