Corpus Christi City Council meeting: Confederate flag float ignites debate

Should the Confederate flag be displayed at the annual Buc Days parade?

During public comment at Tuesday's City Council meeting, residents spoke for and against flying the flag at city events.

The Sons of Confederate Veterans had a float that flew the flag in the parade the past two years.

"Today is a sad day for Corpus Christi," Terry Mills, the local chapter president of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People said in front of council.

"Our issue is that the Confederacy way of life was predicated on the enslavement of African-Americans. Today, what is sad is leadership of our city, county and state don't understand why the Confederacy symbols are so offensive to us."
