Abbott Says Cinemas Can Reopen. Cinemas Say "No, Thanks."

Gov. Greg Abbott's decision today to let Texas' statewide shelter-in-place mandate expire on Friday, and allow a list of businesses that include cinemas to reopen at 25% capacity, may play well with his base. However, do not expect theatres to be firing up projectors any time soon.

In Austin, the first theatre to respond was AFS Cinema. In a statement, the management of the two-screen theatre (run by Austin Film Society) said that they were "shocked" by the decision to reopen, even at 25% capacity, and that the cinema will remain closed for the foreseeable future.

Here's the full statement from AFS CEO Rebecca Campbell:

"The fractured federal response to Covid-19 left cities and local governments grappling with limited information and resources as the virus rapidly spread right under our noses. Texas is the state with the fewest number of tests issued per capita, Travis County Covid-19 cases are on the rise, and experts from around the world are warning about the dangers of reopening too early. We are shocked at the decision of the governor to declare it safe to open movie theaters, even at 25% capacity. The AFS Cinema will remain closed until further notice as we do our part to prevent the spread of this deadly virus."

Alamo Drafthouse quickly followed with their own statement that none of their locations – neither the six in the Austin area, or the other 19 around the state, will be opening any time soon.

"Opening safely is a very complex project that involves countless new procedures and equipment, all of which require extensive training. This is something we cannot and will not do casually or quickly. We will not be opening this weekend. But know this, when we do open, we will be providing the safest possible experience for both our staff and our guests and we can’t wait to see you all again!"

Kudos to the responsible businesses that aim to protect the public over pursuing a few doillars from those that are foolhardy and don't care whether they continue to spread the Trump virus.

Forcing people to work without adequate testing , or having a system in place to produce enough medical supplies for public protections is absent . By not knowing the real infection rates from refusing mass testing will fail badly , and these politicians promoting reopening will soon be having a change of heart, if they have one. Its still unsafe and many people will not return , and why trump and Moscow Mitch are refusing more stimulus checks, they're trying to starve us into prematurely returning while an active pandemic from this virus is still attacking us. Its clear to me this is already backfiring and trump is now suggesting schools return . Remember they haven't cleaned anything yet , including all ventilation systems , or know what kids could be carriers now without testing. It looks to me trump is intentionally trying to hurt us now with this pandemic to improve his re-election chances, it won't . Its backfiring on them already, and you know it is because Moscow Mitch is already trying to put it into law lawsuits against them cannot be done, which to me shows they know it is a mistake , and leaves them at great legal risk. The people going out soon will also change their minds when it blows up even worse from this, and it will, only making this last longer.

The real reason is buried at the end of the article. Opening their doors would cost them more than staying closed.

It isn't just that opening now would be more expensive... they don't have a product to sell.

I'm sure that, at least in theory, some areas of the country are ready to open up gradually... but movie theaters aren't going to benefit from that for some time.

Add to all of that the fact that just about every pandemic movie ever shown includes a scene of people being infected at a theater...
