Either one is obviously a huge step up from Cornyn.

Democratic Senate hopefuls steer middle-of-the-road course in debate before July 14 runoff

AUSTIN — The two candidates in the Democratic runoff for the U.S. Senate nomination steered centrist courses Saturday night with neither veering into the other's lane, and both taking aim at three-term Republican John Cornyn.

MJ Hegar, a former Air Force helicopter pilot, was more aggressive toward Cornyn in the hour-long debate with state Sen. Royce West.

She hammered the incumbent as a Washington, D.C., insider who is too chummy with deep-pocket Republican voters and too beholden to the National Rifle Association.

West, a 27-year veteran of the Texas Senate, presented himself as the seasoned statesman who knows how to plow past partisan gridlock. But he also took aim at Cornyn when openings presented themselves.

Hegar is younger, spunky and outgoing. West is stable, experienced, and often answered the questions more adequately. Which will bring out more voters this year, women, or minorities???? I don't know.

White women in Texas are still pretty conservative, having voted over 50% for Abbott over Wendy Davis in the last governor election. I think the George Floyd murder may be a motivator for our AA base, so my unreliable gut says West. I'll be happy with either.
