El Paso health order closing classrooms could set precedent if governor doesn't intervene
Teachers across the state have their eyes on an El Paso health department order delaying the start of classroom instruction that could have major statewide implications if the governor allows it to stand.
El Paso City-County Health Authority Dr. Hector Ocaranza on July 9 ordered classrooms can't reopen until Sept. 8. The move is at odds with a Texas Education Agency mandate that schools reopen classrooms when the new school year begins in August.
If Gov. Greg Abbott does not intervene to prevent the implementation of El Paso's order, other local health authorities may similarly delay students' return to the classroom until Texas slows the spread of coronavirus.
El Paso Mayor Dee Margo expressed confidence in Ocaranza's order, saying, "it wouldn't surprise me if others follow as well."
