Texas to rename football field in honor of Earl Campbell and Ricky Williams

In a move to better promote diversity, inclusion and equity and fully to support its Black students, The University of Texas said in a news release on Monday that the school will be renaming its football field to honor a pair of Longhorn greats — Earl Campbell and Ricky Williams.

Both Campbell and Williams are former Heisman trophy winners.

The field was previously named for Joe Jamail.

Texas will also erect a statue of Julius Whittier, the Longhorns’ first Black football letterman, at DKR-Texas Memorial Stadium.

Interim President Jay Hartzell said that one thing that would remain the same is the school's alma mater and unofficial fight song, “The Eyes of Texas.”

He never played football, so the stadium was named because of his donations to UT.
He was a UT alumni, both undergraduate and law school. Rightfully so, he has a pavilion in the law school named after him.

I'm sure the Jamail family was consulted about the stadium name change ahead of time. I'm pretty sure they would support the name change.

Joseph Dahr Jamail Jr. (October 19, 1925 – December 23, 2015) was an American attorney and billionaire. The wealthiest practicing attorney in America, he was frequently referred to as the "King of Torts".[2]

After serving in the Pacific during World War II, Jamail returned to UT, where he received his B.A. in 1950 and The University of Texas School of Law where he received his J.D. in 1953. In 1986 The University of Texas School of Law created the Joseph D. Jamail Centennial Chair in Law and Advocacy in his honor.[7]

The Joseph D. Jamail Jr. Pavilion at the University of Texas School of Law is named after him. Also located on the University of Texas campus is the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center, named for him and his wife. The University has erected two statues on campus in his honor. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joe_Jamail
