Texas Legislators on Both Sides of Aisle Slam Shelley Luther's Anti-Asian Comments

Democratic state Rep. Gene Wu’s parents came here as Chinese students, as did his wife’s. When he saw Shelley Luther’s “racist” tweet last week, he demanded that she apologize.

Luther is the Dallas salon owner who’s running for state House District 62 along the Texas-Oklahoma border. She also unsuccessfully ran for state Senate in 2020.

In a since-deleted tweet last Wednesday, Luther enraged many when she wrote, “Chinese students should be BANNED from attending all Texas universities. No more Communists!” She later wrote it’s “common sense” to bar Chinese Communist Party (CCP) members from schools.

For Houston attorney Wu, such remarks are dangerous for Asian Americans everywhere. On top of seeing her comments as “ignorant,” some say they could be a green light for racist behavior.

1. These aren't "anti-Asian" comments, they are "anti-CCP" comments

That's a big difference. As someone who lives in Asia, with family on both sides of the Pacific, I don't construe her comments as being "anti-Japanese" or "anti-Korean", or "anti-Taiwanese", or "anti-Vietnamese", etc. Just "anti Chinese Communist Party". Still, I am straddling the fence on this one. One of my best friends was someone from Communist China who was a student at a North American university just after the Tiananmen Square Massacre. But he hated the Chinese Communist Party, with all his heart and soul. He poured his guts out to me because he knew I would never rat on him, unlike some of his fellow Chinese students. He would never go to parties with fellow Chinese students, because he was afraid of saying something that might be used against him back in China. I have read that it's still like that at some Canadian universities, and thus probably the same at some US universities.

As one who has family on BOTH sides of the Pacific Ocean, I do NOT see these comments as "anti-Asian". They are "anti-CCP". And from what I've seen of the CCP from my 60 years on this Earth, I see nothing to disagree with. You can be "anti-CCP" (like me) and NOT be "anti-Asian".

Are there any complaints against Chinese students from Taiwan? It's a complaint against Chinese Communism, not against Asians in general.

Students from the CCP rat on other students from China. My friend let me know that back in the 1990s. I've read where that is still a problem in Canadian universities, even today. Probably in US universities as well.

It would be racism if is was against ALL students from Asia. That is definitely not the case here-- it is just against the CHINESE COMMUNIST PARTY, an ideology which has shown time and time again to be in stark contrast to Western ideals, NOT a race of people. Texas welcomes Chinese people from TAIWAN, and is seeking to develop important minerals with people from TAIWAN and other FRIENDLY EAST ASIAN nations, like Japan. And Texas welcomes semiconductor chip investment from Taiwan, South Korea, and other FRIENDLY EAST ASIAN nations.

You have absolutely NO IDEA what you are talking about!! I have family on BOTH SIDES OF THE PACIFIC. I work for a JAPANESE company that is trying to work for the future of JAPAN, AND the United States and its allies. I have lived in East Asia for more than 3 DECADES. During that time, I have seen PLA tanks CRUSH advocates for democracy at Tiananmen Square. I have seen Hong Kong journalists being arrested just because they advocate for DEMOCRACY. I have seen a Chinese winner of the Nobel Peace Prize die while under Chinese Communist imprisonment just for advocating for DEMOCRACY in China. So please, don't preach to me about IDEOLOGY. I've seem some of the very worst of Chinese Communism.

10. The comment refusing all Chinese people US entry just to deter Communism is plainly racist.

I’m not debating the nature of any political ideology, it’s about respect for human beings.

Anti-Communism seems to be what Luther and others want to make it about, but what is at issue with these comments isn’t anti-Communism. It is the wrong of conflating the entirety of Chinese people with Communism and the US acting against them in order to arrest Communism.

It’s racism.

11. Um, it's not just Texas wanting Chinese Communists at its universities

Texas can't control US immigration. But Texas can agree to limit mainland Chinese admission to its state universities. I can agree with that, after my 30+ years of experience with Chinese Communists. You cannot trust Chinese Communists. I do have friends who are refugees in a sense from China, though. They have told me awful stories about their times in Communist China.

Let me know when they are against people from TAIWAN, JAPAN, or SOUTH KOREA, investing in Texas. Samsung is currently investing in its 2nd semiconductor plant in Texas.
