Related: About this forumMarker to claim Nacogdoches as Sam Houston’s first Texas home
Nacogdoches has claimed ownership of Sam Houstons first home in Texas after research by Dr. Jere Jackson shows he lived on the site of what is now the Gladys Hampton building.
I found an affidavit that states Houston lived here during his first 10 years in East Texas, said Jackson, a professor at Stephen F. Austin State University. This is what made the Texas Historical Commission have to give in and say this was Sam Houstons first home.

(112,252 posts)2. Sure did.
I only knew one person from there who is about 15 years younger than me, but he was pretty bright. He is working on his PhD in astrophysics at UT.

The sign at the city limits reads "Welcome to Nacogdoches. Please set your watch back 100 years."

Hi,
Stephen F. Austin Univ, half the students are from the Dallas area & the other half from the Houston area or at least it seems like that way. Everybody came through Nacogdoches, from High Private David Crockett to supposedly the Marx Brothers who played in the town before they were famous. The El Camino Reale went through town & 4 signers of the Texas Declaration of Independence are buried in the city Cemetery. YES ! they are serious about their Heritage in Nacogdoches.
