Republican Congressman Introduces Bill To Require Political Approval Of Scientific Papers

Congressman Lamar Smith of Texas really does not understand science. Not scientific method, not scientific theories or laws, none of it. Which is why he submitted a bill draft titled the “High Quality Research Act” which would in effect add a politician into scientific studies.

The bill says that any research done using federal funds (which is the majority of research done in the United States) must have its results and finding approved by the Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation of the Senate and the Committee on Science, Space, and Technology of the House of Representatives. If the findings are not agreed to, the research is taken from the researchers and disposed of by Congress as it sees fit.

Congressman Smith has already landed himself in scientific hot water over his April 25th Letter to the National Science Foundation where he demanded that the NSF conduct an investigaton into five research programs which contradict policies his donors want passed. This is what was expected when the noted anti-science Texan was appointed to the Congressional Committee on Science, Space and Technology.

The political officer must approve all science before it can be released to the public?

Thoroughly totalitarian.

Witness the fossil-fuel funded "scientists" who deny climate change. Indeed, we may get to the point where politicians supervise and censor the NSA and then fund only politically-motivated science. I'd like to think we're a long way from that ... at the moment.

Need to start a petition to have those schools revoke his diplomas, because he obviously never learned a thing, and if they don't, pull their accreditation.

I'm a SIXTH generation Texan, and this is way beyond just typical back of beyond crazy.

This guy is nuts, dangerous, and needs to be defused.

Please.

Now a patient can go see other doctors for second and specialist opinions.

10. Why not have the legislature pass a law that Pi=3
Sat May 4, 2013, 02:56 PM
May 2013

Years ago, a state legislator offered a bill to legislate Pi=3 so it is easier to remember. Another in TN offered a bill eliminating foreign language being taught in school because if English was good enough for Jesus, it was good enough for their students. The list goes on. I wish I could find citations for both, but, being in my late 60s, I remember reading both somewhere.

Oh yeah, they can pass a bill that the earth is flat, the sun goes around the earth, and Lysenko should get a Nobel prize for his discoveries.

Pass a law requiring any research conducted to have a profitable outcome. Eliminate basic science research and only allow industrial research which will make products that contain electrolytes.

We know they are anti-science when the science doesn't reflect their beliefs. But science should not be politicized and it should not be withheld because of religious perspectives. This type of shit tells us they would like to return to the days before enlightenment. Who in their right mind would want that?
