Thousands honor Houston's four fallen firefighters

Thousands honor Houston's four fallen firefighters

Silence descended on Reliant Arena Wednesday as the thousands gathered to mourn four fallen Houston firefighters rose in their seats as the victims' family members entered the hall. It was as if the throng collectively held its breath, steeling itself for the emotionally wrenching outpouring to come.

The morning of mourning had begun hours earlier as fire trucks from around the region and state inched past the arena in tribute to the victims. Inside, the arena floor was a sea of blue as firefighters clad in keenly pressed dress blues sat on the floor. At the arena's front were two ladder trucks, one from Station 68, the other from Station 51. The numbers emblazoned on the vehicles were covered in black — a traditional sign that one of the unit's members has perished.

As the service began, injured firefighter Anthony Livesay was wheeled to the front on a stretcher. Another injured firefighter, Robert Yarborough, then was brought forward in a wheelchair. Both men had been released from the hospital to attend the memorial.

The families of the dead firefighters — Matthew Renaud, Robert Bebee, Robert Garner and Anne Sullivan — were announced as they entered the hall. Many of those gathered saluted.

Emergency vehicles lined both sides of 610 South this morning as I drove to work. There was a bit of a traffic jam because of it. Still, it made quite a sight, seeing all those firetrucks and EMS vehicles lined up with their lights on. I tuned my radio to a local FM news/traffic station and they mentioned that the San Antonio FD was filling in for HFD firehouses while they went to the memorial service. Thanks SA!

It was reported that there are members of fire departments from all over the country here, too. I can believe that when I saw all those vehicles.

I never would have guessed, either, that the restaurant where the fire (presumably) started, Bhojan, would have created such an inferno. They had great vegetarian fare. And now there are at least five different agencies investigating the site.

FARK said "Four firefighters killed in Houston blaze. There is nothing funny about this. This is just awful."

Don't read the comments though. Some people want to find humor in everything and it's not always appropriate, as in this case.

There was a photo of Mayor Parker unsuccessfully trying to hold back tears in her speech that's also heart-wrenching. Perry showed up last minute, but (predictably) there wasn't much emotion in his words, no matter how he might have worded it.
