First time in over 50 years caffeinated sodas heading to Brigham Young campus

College students have long relied on caffeine to cram for exams, stay awake to write term papers and get an afternoon boost to keep alert for the last classes of the day.

Whether it’s been an espresso-laced coffee or a cold Coca-Cola, caffeinated drinks have fueled campuses for decades.

But Brigham Young University students, who predominantly are members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, have gone without as part of a central tenet of their religion, which historically has barred the use of caffeine, drugs or alcohol. While the campus has had soda vending machines, none of the drinks sold were caffeinated.

On Thursday, the church-owned university announced a reversal and for the first time since the 1950s will sell Coca Cola and other caffeine-infused drinks on campus.

Explaining the decision, Dean Wright, the director of BYU’s dining services, said that the goal of the change is “simply working to meet the preferences of our customers.”

and to have matured enough to make reasonable decisions about the use of all substances, particularly those as common-place as caffeine? Heck, I even synthesized caffeine during organic chemistry lab.
