CHARLOTTESVILLE The violent arrest of a University of Virginia student sparked new scrutiny of Virginias Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control on Thursday as university officials and Richmond lawmakers questioned the tactics and approach of the agencys law enforcement officers.
The arrest put Charlottesville at the center of a national debate over white police officers treatment of black youths, and it brought long-simmering racial tensions to the surface at a school steeped in Southern tradition.
The bloody incident also spurred student protests and what Virginia State Police said would be a comprehensive investigation into the arrest, both an administrative review at Gov. Terry McAuliffes request and a criminal investigation at the behest of local prosecutors.
Getting arrested shouldnt involve getting stitches, U-Va. President Teresa A. Sullivan said in an interview with The Washington Post. Sullivan met with the student Thursday, and she wrote in a letter to alumni that members of our community should feel safe from the threat of bodily harm and other forms of violence.

Brown reported from Washington, Vozzella from Richmond. T. Rees Shapiro in Newport News and Rachel Weiner in Washington contributed to this report.

(182,803 posts)The host is a former cop (and was in professional wrestling as a "manager" and his focus was on "well unless you've been a cop you don't know what you are talking about". His callers of course followed that line with their own experience and this-student-is-just-whining type stuff.
The odd part is that the host himself was all over the ABC cops when a bunch of them went nuts on a (white) girl who had a case of water that the cops thought was alcohol. The ABC cops surrounded her car and were banging in the windows. The host was right about that but as far as I know made no mention of it yesterday.

Johnson was charged with resisting arrest, obstructing justice without threats of force, and profane swearing or intoxication in public at 4:21 a.m. The arresting officer was Alcohol and Beverage Control special agent J. Miller.

(15,229 posts)A promising black tertiary student will make the natural bully in the police jealous at the thought the lad could end up with a higher-status position in society. It happened in London a few years ago to another promising black student. A professional criminal, who was the father of one of the killers, was in cahoots with a corrupt detective, who obstructed the investigation. The difference is that those killes had a hard time of it afterwards as they were despised by the populace, rather than the latter making excuses for them. And the UK is as racist as most countries.
Did you see the Victorian photos of those very soignee and smartly dressed African American women, looking very patrician, also some very grand-looking, family photos posted to DU a week or so earlier. That will have sent the racist Southerners barmy, which may explain why that period seems to have been so short-lived.

(9,474 posts)IIRC, they're the ones responsible for the kerfuffle involving a co-ed and bottled water. The problem in Va. is that the ABC officers operate independently from campus police and local police. Glad Terry called for an independent investigation. UVa president also appears to be responding appropriately.
I sincerely hope hope these agents lose their jobs over this. Once might be a mistake, twice is a trend. Looks like ABC needs an overhaul.

(15,229 posts)but the degree to which these lawless police personify that sorry cocktail beggars belief, doesn't it? And I'd long thought it would be better to replace your airport police with robots.
Ironical, isn't it? People get promoted for their decision-making, and, of course, their salaries rise proportionately, the more difficult the decisions. In a more or less normal country. But these guys should be charged for the work they do, and since they could never pay the bill their folly gives rise to, perhaps they should be enslaved; bonded servitude. Just like your prison gulag people, many of whom shouldn't, of course, have been incarcerated
