I lived near that mall where the girls disappeared. It happened in Montgomery County , Maryland. The county was rapidly transitioning from a laid-back basically rural area (outside Washington, D.C.) to a high powered , high market area. The disappearance of the two girls shocked the community and seemed to signal that dark days were ahead and the past days of open-doors and everyone knowing everyone was over.
