Lt. Gov. Ralph Northam made his candidacy for the 2017 Democratic Party gubernatorial nomination in an email on Tuesday. As a former Army doctor and practicing pediatric neurologist, I know that the best way to serve people is to listen to their needs and concerns. And as a public official, Ive taken the same approach to serving our Commonwealth, said Northam, who was elected to the number-two position in state government in 2013.
A former state senator, Northam is an alum of Virginia Military Institute and former U.S. Army physician who treated casualties during Operation Desert Storm. He defeated Republican E.W. Jackson in the 2013 state elections with 55% of the vote.
Northam will likely not face a primary challenge in the 2017 cycle, with Democrat Mark Herring, the sitting Attorney General, having announced earlier this year that he will run for re-election.
Northam touted the successes of the Democratic administration led by Gov. Terry McAuliffe that he has helped shepherd through the Virginia General Assembly in his announcement. Weve expanded access to affordable health care, created over 40,000 jobs, and opened up pre-K to thousands of young Virginians, Northam said. Ive broken ties on Senate votes in favor of increasing the minimum wage, banning discrimination in the workplace, and repealing the invasive ultrasound mandate.
We need to continue investing in early childhood education, creating jobs in the new Virginia economy, protecting womens reproductive rights and expanding access to Medicaid for 400,000 of our citizens, Northam said.

(5,902 posts)If God came down some years from now, and told me that Ben Carson had, in fact, been hypnotized and manipulated à la Manchurian Candidate, I probably wouldn't be the least surprised.
In the meantime, all the best to Dr. Northam - although, like Governor McAuliffe, he probably wouldn't be able to get much done with an Assembly controlled like it is by Gerrymandered tea baggers.

Seriously though, he's a very decent man and I hope he wins. The last thing this stagnant state needs is a CIA contractor grease monkey like Ed Gillespie.
My guess is that he's announcing this early to shore up his name recognition (you'd be surprised how many people don't know who the Lieutenant Governor is in this state). Dr. Northam has an uphill battle ahead of him, no doubt about it: Virginia is still reeling from the 2009 recession (lots of foreclosures and shuttered factories), and the GOP-dominated Legislature won't let a pine needle through if it came from Governor McAuliffe's office (even bills they themselves had earlier introduced). A massive GOP effort to paint McAuliffe as ineffective (of course) is already underway. And though popular, Northam himself is bound to be weighed down by some of that.
We shall see.

(5,902 posts)A lot of it will be up to the Northern Virgina metro area around DC, the most populous and wealthiest of Virginia's regions and until the 2008 collapse largely a GOP bastion (today very much Democratic-leaning).
All the best.
