LG candidate Susan Platt and husband resolved unpaid U.S. tax bill of nearly $100,000

Susan Platt, a Democratic candidate for lieutenant governor, and her husband faced a federal tax lien in 2011 for failing to pay nearly $100,000 in tax debt. The lien was released in May 2016 after the Platts paid the amount, according to court records in Fairfax County.

The Internal Revenue Service filed notice of the lien in October 2011 because of an unpaid balance of $51,554.82 for the tax period ending in December 2007 and $45,664.59 for the tax period ending in December 2010.

The government takes such action to make a legal claim against a taxpayer’s property if the taxpayer fails to pay a tax debt. A lien comes after the IRS assesses liability and sends the taxpayer a bill explaining how much is owed.

In a statement emailed by her campaign manager, Platt said the problem came during a time of family crisis involving her late stepdaughter.
