'Richmond needs to lead on this': Councilman to seek removal of city's Confederate monuments; Stoney explains reversal
A Richmond city councilman said Thursday that he is planning to introduce legislation seeking to remove the Confederate statues on Monument Avenue.
Michael Jones, who represents the 9th District, said he met Wednesday with City Attorney Allen Jackson and council staff members to discuss how to go about removing the monuments. Jones plans to introduce a monument-related measure at the councils Sept. 11 meeting, he said.
Jones pointed to leaders in Baltimore, New Orleans and elsewhere acting swiftly to remove Confederate statues, which he called an affront to African-Americans.
I think the city of Richmond needs to lead on this, he said. You look at all these other localities that are making a moral stand and at some point in time, Richmond was going to have to weigh in on this.
